The models were Charlie Mitchell (1885-1957) and Harry Giles, posing on the captured German ship "Ponape" anchored off King Harry Ferry. On its leaving Antwerp, the "Ponape" was captured by British warships and it came into Falmouth harbour on 21 September 1914.
