In 1992, Jose Zuniga, U.S. Army sergeant and Gulf War Veteran, became the 6th Army's "Soldier of the Year".
"I am damned proud to serve with you, son," said the Commander of the Sixth U.S. Army as he decorated Sgt. José Zuniga as "Soldier of the Year".
Five weeks later, Sergeant Zuniga stood before a gathering of nearly one million people at the 1993 Gay and Lesbian March on Washington, D.C. His speech rocked a whole nation when he revealed that he was gay. He was immediately declared "persona non grata".
