Collin, a psychology student at the University of Winnipeg and employee at Gio's bar, in February 2002, with his boyfriend Tim Penner, won a Hot 103 Radio and Garden City Shopping Centre-sponsored kissing contest.

When the Winnipeg Sun printed a positive story on the win, as well as an editorial in favour of the acceptance of homosexuality, the newspaper (and Garden City Shopping Centre) received a number of complaints from homophobic Winnipeggers.
