Born in Wels, upper Austria, he grew up and attended elementary school in Wimsbach.

Günter Tolar is well known in Austria particularly for the presentation of the television broadcasts "who lies three times" (1973 - 1977) and "larva in Austria". In 1991 his life companion (of fifteen years) died for AIDS related illness. As a consequence, Günter decided to Come Out and engage for homosexual people and AIDS patients. Since 2000 he is SoHo (Sozialismus und Homosexualität) Federal leader and represents the working group in the Federal Party executive committee of the SPÖ.
