Born at Cowdray House, Midhurst, he was a patron of theatre, friend and protector of Shakespeare, and his possible lover. Shakespeare dedicated Venus and Adonis, and The Rape of Lucrece to him. Henry Wriothesley died of fiever at Bergen op Zoom, in the Flanders, during the war against the Spaniards.
