A native of Caracas, Daniel is the grandson of Holocaust survivors. He went to the U.S.A. in 1997 to study journalism and Latin American and Caribbean studies at New York University's graduate school. An internship with el Nuevo Herald landed him a full-time position as a reporter in 1999. Since 2007, he is a full-time columnist exploring the contentious issues in Miami's conservative Hispanic culture.
Daniel writes about the lives and issues that affect South Floridians but don't get enough public attention. View From El Nuevo Herald is his weekly column in The Miami Herald.
He has won several awards from the National Association of Hispanic Journalist, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the National Association of Hispanic Publications. Daniel published a bilingual book Punto de Partida: Stories of Truth and Hope with the Human Services Coalition, aiming to inspire readers to take action to improve their communities.
Daniel was honored by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation at its annual media awards ceremony held Saturday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino near Hollywood. The South Florida GLAAD awards focused on Hispanic and Spanish-language media.
