Jeff Sheehy is a longtime member of Survive AIDS. He is HIV-positive since 1997. A long time gay community advocate, he received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Texas in Austin. He organized a successful nationwide boycott of United Airlines over domestic partner benefits.
Jeff Sheehy has been appointed, in 2004, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom's HIV/AIDS Advisor. He will work for the mayor without pay, helping Newsom in crafting HIV/AIDS policies and programs for San Francisco. He previously has served in the District Attorney's Office as a hate-crime victim's advocate. He is currently the Deputy Director for Communications at the University of California San Francisco AIDS Research Institute.
His position in the San Francisco District Attorney's Office was centered around crimes involving same-sex & transgender victims of domestic violence & hate crimes. He also served as member of Survive AIDS, where he assisted in obtaining three million dollars in state funding to study solid organ transplants in people with HIV.
He has received a number of prestigious awards such as the Tomas Fabregas AIDS Hero Award, presented at San Francisco's AIDS Candlelight March in 2001.
