Pirkko Helena Saisio
(1949 - living) Finland
Writer, actress, playwright
Lesbian writings by female authors were refused by Finnish Publishers. Thus, in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Pirkko Saisio started using the pseudonyms "Jukka Larsson" ans "Eva Wein". With the male pseudonym Jukka Larsson, Saisio received positive reviews for her trilogy Kiusaaja (The Tormentor, 1986), Viettelijä (The Tempter, 1987), and Kantaja (The Bearer, 1991), inspired by biblical texts.
When the media tried to find out the identity of the author, there were speculations as to which of the Finnish male authors was lurking behind the pseudonym. Together with her female partner, Pirjo Honkasalo, a filmmaker, Saisio created an outward appearance for the fictive Jukka Larsson. They even took photographs of Saisio with false moustache. Finally, Saisio revealed the truth about Jukka Larsson in an interview. She also had an opportunity to see how different male and female authors are treated by critics.
Honkasalo and Saisio have together parented Pirkko's biological daughter Elsa. In the mid 1990s Saisio came out as a lesbian mother when public discussion for legislation of same sex marriages and gay and lesbian adoption rights was raised in Finland. Presently Saisio has a fixed-term post as a professor in the Theatre Academy of Finland.
