Patricia Rozema was born to a Dutch immigrant family at Kingston, Ontario.
In 1981, she received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and English Literature from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was raised Calvinist and identifies as a "devout agnostic".
Rozema is quiet about her personal life, but does talk about her relationship with her partner Lesley Barber.
