Alan Newby joined the Key West Police Department in 1990. He was closeted, afraid to let anyone know his sexual orientation. in 1997, the department was accused by some gay activists of being homophobic. Newby held a news conference, announced he is gay and defended his fellow cops.

He is at present lieutenant commander in the Key West Police Department and president of FLA-LEGAL (Florida Law Enforcement Gays and Lesbians).
