José began his dance career in Caracas; he left his native Venezuela in 1988, and moved to New York studying with Merce Cunningham and dancing with Lucinda Childs, Randy Warshaw, Stephen Petronio and Michael Clark. Three years later, in Montreal, he became a member of the Marie Chouinard Dance Company.
He has worked with some of the most celebrated contemporary dance companies and choreographers including Billy T. Jones, the Merce Cunningham Studio, and Lucinda Childs. José is currently the artistic director of William Douglas Dance.
In '95 José collaborated with director Philippe Baylaucq on the art film Lodela, a National Film Board Production. He received a Bessie, a New York Dance and Performance award. He has just completed artistic residencies in France and Belgium. José has been touring extensively in Europe to rave reviews.
