Miller teaches journalism and nonfiction at Tufts University, in Medford, Massachussetts.
In 1989 he published Search Of Gay America: Women And Men In A Time Of Change (1989), then Out of the Past: Gay and Lesbian History from 1869 to the Present (1995), a book that chronicles the modern gay rights movements from the Post-Civil War age of Walt Whitman to the Clinton administration. Lately published also A Journey to the Paranoid Heart of the 1950s in 2002.
