Born to working-class parents on the Isle of Man, she grew up in the industrial south of Yorkshire and attended university in London from 1964. She graduated in social sciences in 1968 and married in the same year. She had two sons.
In 1980 she left her marriage and began living as a lesbian. Her sons stayed with her father, living in close proximity to her in London. March has supported herself by teaching in adult education and conducting writing classes for women.
