When he was University of Manitoba student, he founded Gays for Equality (GFE), the first gay movement organization in Manitoba, February 1972.

He had previously been involved with FREE: Gay Liberation of Minnesota at the University of Minnesota. The Manitoba group was known as the Campus Gay Club until early 1973, when it changed its name to refiect an increasingly political stance. By 1973, GFE offered drop-ins, counselling, a speaker's bureau, lectures, political actions, a library, a gay-line, and dances.
