Evolutionary biologist

Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the State University of New York, whose area of research is the evolution of interactions between plant-eating insects and the plants they eat; author of Science on Trial (explaining how and why evolutionary biology can and should defend itself against creationist attacks), and Evolutionary Biology, one of the most widely used college textbooks in the field.

"[Evolutionary Biology] contains a passage on whether sexual orientation has a genetic basis-and, of course, one can't help talking about the social implications...one of the people who reviewed the manuscript anonymously wrote that it was ludicrous that I should be defending homosexuality."

Dr. Futuyma delivered the keynote lecture for our first annual Darwin Day celebration on the University of Tennessee campus. The lecture, held at the McClung Museum Auditorium, was a great introduction to the relevance of science in today's society, and of teaching the unifying principles of evolution in our schools.

Author of a recently updated book, Science on Trial, Futuyma is adept at explaining how and why evolutionary biology can and should defend itself against creationist attacks. Professor Futuyma is an internationally recognized researcher. He now lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
