Crazy Horse
(ca. 1842 - September 5, 1877) U.S.A.
Lakota chief and warrior
Oglala Sioux chief, whose real name was Tashunka-Witko. He is the strategist of Custer's last stand (the defeat of the Seventh Calvary on June 25, 1876); he earned his reputation among the Lakota people not only by his skill and daring in battle, but also by his fierce determination to preserve his people's traditional way of life.
For example, he refused to allow any photographs to be taken of him; to this day, no sure image (the images on this page are attributed to him, but it isn't sure they really represent him) or even a sketch of him exists. The photo at the bottom is a scale model of the Crazy Horse monument under construction in Crazy Horse, South Dakota. Crazy Horse had at least one berdache (two-spirited male) as a wife.
