James Cleveland

Born in Chicago, Illinois he attended Roosevelt University. Cleveland founded the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Los Angeles and served as its pastor. He is better know for his work as a gospel recording artist, receiving a posthumous fourth Grammy for the LP Having Church. Toward the end of his life he moved beyond internalized homophobia to become active in the fight against AIDS. He died in Los Angeles, of AIDS-related complications.
