Sir John Chute of the Vyne
(January 10, 1703 - May 25, 1775) U.K.
Writer and poet
Born in Sherborne Saint John, Hampshire, son of Edward Chute and Katherine Keck. He was a friend and correspondent of Horace Walpole. He contribued greatly to the creation of Strawberry Hill. Walpole referred to him as "my oracle in taste...". He has been credited with more fidelity to antiquity than his fellow conoisseur, the more fantastic Richard Bentley.
The sketch was made by Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757), the famous Venetian pastel painter and miniaturist, who did sketches on both Walpole and Sir John Chute, while they were in Venice, in 1747.
