Born as George Richard Chamberlain in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, he attended Pomona College in California.

Richard became famous as dr. Kildare in the TV-series of the same name. Dr. Kildare made Richard Chamberlain a television star and sex symbol in the late 1950s and early '60s.

"The Thornbirds" mini-series in 1983 made him a huge TV star again. In between he starred in feature films.

Chamberlain and his lover of many years, Martin Rabbett, live in Honolulu, Hawaii.

He has served as honorary chair of the advisory board of Hawaii Public Television Foundation.
