Karen Busby
(? - living) U.S.A.
Law professor
University of Manitoba law professor and legal activist; her research and teaching interests range over equality law, civil procedure and administrative law.
In 2001 she was a founding member of an ad-hoc group later called "Group Organizing on Same Sex Issues and Principles" (GOSSIP), which was involved in educating the Manitoba queer community and in successfully lobbying the Manitoba government on various same-sex legal issues.
In 2002 GOSSIP's work led to new Manitoba laws on adoption by same-sex couples, and a new property rights bill for common-law couples (including same-sex couples)
"It's harder for straight folks to hate, or even just tolerate us when they see that we're their sisters, grandchildren, neighbours, teachers, preachers, sports heroes, etc. Pride Day helps make us visible."
