Botha has been active in South African gay and lesbian politics since the early 1980s, when he was a member of the Gay Association of South Africa (GASA). He subsequently played a key role in the Convention for Democracy in South Africa, the preliminary negotiations that led South Africa's first democratic electionsand led the successful lobby to include "sexual orientation" in the Equality Clause of the Interim Costitution.
